Super-8, Super-90s

I found some pretty ropey digital transfers I'd made a few years ago of some Super-8 films I'd shot in the nineties. So I thought I'd chop them together with some public domain music from archive.org

Questions and Answers

If you're preparing for an interview, it's always a good idea to get a sense of what the interviewer (and their editor) wants to cover, even if you know you're not going to get a full list of questions.

And to be honest, there's usually a big question that's the reason why you're there in the first place - either your reason or the reason that the media outlet's contacted you.

Krishnan Guru-Murthy of Channel 4 News has written a piece on his blog about how awkward it can be, from the reporter's point of view, to ask some of those big questions.

Reviews - Stalker and Dougal and the Blue Cat

I fancied doing a bit more print journalism, as it'd been a while since I'd written a piece of any length. I mean, obviously we're not talking New Yorker length here, just a couple of hundred words to limber up a bit.

So I wrote a review of a Russian film, Stalker, by Andrei Tarkovsky.

And I was challenged in the comments box to review Dougal and the Blue Cat next. So I did.

Sketch - Science and that

Missing Hen looks at science - what is it? What's it all about? From the work of Albert Einstein to Alexander Graham Bell, join us as we put science under the microscope*.

* please note, this does not imply science is very small and hard to see.

Sketch - Motivational Posters vs. Numbskulls

Remember the old DC Thomson comics like The Beano and The Dandy? Remember how they used to hand out free motivational posters to put up in the office? No, we don't either.

Sketch - Danger Signs: TV Graphics

The Danger Signs is back with a good hard look at TV graphics. Featuring very little violence and no cusswords. But lots of graphics and the Open University. Which, I suppose is a bit graphic.

Lumiere - Wychbury Hill, Clent

A Lumiere is a silent film of sixty seconds or less. See the Lumiere manifesto at http://videoblogging.info/ This is filmed at the top of Clent hill, Hagley, near Birmingham. You can see the obelisk on the neighbouring Wychbury Hill.

The obelisk that you can see to the right of frame is one of a series of antiquarian monuments the local landowner had built (along with the mock castle to the left, and the Temple of Theseus, that's in the trees in the middle).

The obelisk currently has the large graffiti on the side - Who Put Bella in the Witch Elm - referring to a famous local mystery from the Second World War in which a woman's dead body was found in a nearby wood (at the base of the hill the camera's standing on).

Videojournalism - Coventry Festival of Youth Arts

I visited the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry earlier this week to shoot this news item. Young people from youth clubs across the city came together for a sell-out performance of music, dance, photography and art.
